In 1942 in the Novi Sad’s region, under the occupiers, the mass execution of Serbs, Jews, and Roms happened by the Hungarian authorities. This liquidation was called the Novi Sad raid or Novi Sad Raid. It was conducted from 21 to 23 January, and therefore is also called the “January raid”. Over 1,300 people have been executed and thrown into the Danube graves and some of them were missing during the raid, a total of 4,000 Serbs, Jews, and Gypsies.

On the city quay now known as “the Quay of the victims of the raid”, there is a monument  erected in a memory of the mass murder. The monument represents a bronze composition high four meters, called “Family” because it shows human silhouettes with children. It was built in 1971 and its author is sculptor Jovan Soldatovic who completed it with another 78 bronze panels in 1992. Four panels carry information about the event, and the other 66 contains engraved names of executed people.
