Sergiy Radonjeski (1314-1392) is considered as the founder and restorer of Russian monasticism. He is the most respected Russian saint according to the nation’s opinion. According to the Julian church calendar, the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Sergiy Radonjeski is celebrated on July 5.
Sergiy is born as Bartholomew and with 10 years he moved to the city Radonjes. With his brother Stefan, he erected a small wooden church in honor of the Holy Trinity, in whose place today are the same name Cathedral and Church, and there he was given a monastic name Sergiy. For many years, Sergius was abbot and priest. For his life, he built more than 40 monasteries. The Danube Park in Novi Sad is the location of his stone figure which is the work of sculptor Vyacheslav Klikov. The figure represents a tribute to Novi Sad from the Serbian-Russian friendship and it was placed in the park in 1992.
